Commented on Yeong tyan’s sketches for her coursework last year. (there were a lot of sketches, i’m posting the ones i like most):
Whew. your sketches are so cool! (somehow i think they look nicer than your final painting for coursework, no offense
) I especially like your last sketch of rain dripping into water, as it is so realistic, and even brings out the transparency of water!! Totally takes my breath away ~wheew~ I like the way you caught the drip and the startings of a splash in action, enhancing the feeling of fluidity and ‘flowing-ness’ of water. This sketch is also outstanding cos it has a feeling of action within serenity – action because the drop of rain disturbs the once-still surface of the water, resulting in the beginnings of a splash; serenity because we can see that the water is only disturbed by that raindrop, and the picture is frozen in that spilt second when time seems to stop.
hmmm. just an area for improvement though, i think the water is a bit too dark, making it look like some other fluid/ water in a dark place.. so maybe you can reduce the shading to enhance the transparency of the picture and make it look ‘cleaner’
And I think your little water droplet character is sooo cute and lively! esp the 1st 2 sketches in your 1st picture. Brings out the feeling of the gentle flow of water. I think it can be a great character for a book illustration! ![]()
as for suggestions.. maybe you can try merging your water droplet character into e last sketch of dripping rain? The raindrop can well be your character (:
