Copy of Great Master’s Work

Last year during the June hols we were tasked with copying of a great master’s work with acrylic paint. the work i chose is:

Virgin of the Rocks – Leonardo Da Vinci, 1483-1486

Full original painting            Angel Uriel (cropped from original)

hmmm. so beautiful right. cos it was drawn by Da Vinci! the greatest great masters of all time! (haha. so i think) Well, perhaps u can say i was being ambitious XD but my copy of angel Uriel turned out.. um. the total opposite, i.e. like a witch >< ackkk. *shudders* dont want to even show it here… it totally pales in comparison. :(

See? I was right wasnt i.
I think the angel’s face is too sharp and angular! eh. wait. Now it seems like it’s too round at the base of her cheek. Anyway the chin which points outwards too much, making her look like a witch. The gaze of the ‘angel’ is wrong, adding on to the ‘evil intent’ look. It’s as if she’s planning something horrible with that slant-eyed gaze instead of gazing down peacefully.
Furthermore, i couldnt get the effect of e light on the ‘angel’, so the colours turned out weird. The skin tone is too reddish i think. But when i tried to make it more yellowish and bright, the angel looked as if she had sickly skin. ahhh. so irritating. The colour of her dress is also too dark and green, losing the feel of the material.
The only thing i’m satisfied with is her hair, cos i think i brought out the curls quite well. But the shadow of her on her forehead again spoils it, cos the shadow just looks so fake and.. sudden.
The background looks ok, and i am proud to say that i didnt use black paint at all! the dark colours were all done by mixing many colours together, so if you look closely you’ll see the patches of different colours!

Anyway, this is my first piece of art work done with acrylic, so i guess i have to say that i’m quite pleased with my first attempt (refering to painting techniques, not the full paintng of course) i realise i can blend quite well, although the colour tone isnt the exact one in the original work.

Size of work: 34cm by 40cm

Comments please! :)
